KS2 Maths

At Thomas Deacon Academy Juniors, we follow the White Rose Maths Hub scheme of work. This allows all children to develop their understanding of fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Children will be given the opportunity to develop their understanding of number, shape, statistics and measure and apply their understanding to a range of different contexts. This approach is continued into the main phase, allowing for consistency right through to Key Stage 5.

Maths lessons are planned and delivered using the Trust pedagogical model (see diagram). Teachers deliver their lessons using a range of tools such as modelled, guided, partner and independent practice which means that children receive the appropriate level of support and challenge.

Useful Apps

A brilliant online tool for developing your times tables knowledge. Children can earn coins to unlock new cool avatars and items!

Another online tool that allows children to develop with all areas of the Maths curriculum. Children can earn coins, as well as certificates for all that they achieve.

The Maths Learning Centre has a whole range of free apps that make understanding numbers easier. They are available on the website, iPad or tablet. These will also be used in school from time to time.

Calculation Progression

Here are some documents that give an overview of what children should know by the end of a given year, along with examples about the methods that we use in schools. This gives a consistent approach to all learning.

Language Descriptors

At TDAJ, we try to ensure that we are consistent with our use of language so that children can reason effectively throughout their time at TDA. Therefore, we have a language document that contains all the vocabulary children will be using each year. This is especially useful when learning new concepts or when children are applying their knowledge to increasingly difficult concepts.
