The Communications College is one of the largest and most vibrant Colleges in Thomas Deacon Academy. In spite of the size of the College, we have a highly supportive and collaborative team of 40 staff who are highly dedicated to their fellow professionals and the 343 students who are based within the College.
The Communication College is headed by Emma Taplin, College Leader. There are 34 other staff consisting of 25 teachers, 2 Foreign Language Assistants, 2 GTP Teachers, 2 Instructors and 2 Administrative staff. The college is also supported by Teaching Assistant which are generally attached to the Achievement College. Subjects taught within the Communication College are English, Modern Foreign Languages and Media.
There are two Senior Leaders within the College who are responsible for Reading, Writing and Communication and EAL along with the Community Strategy Leader.
Subjects and Qualifications
The Communications College provides teaching in English, Media Studies, Modern Foreign Languages (including French, Spanish, Urdu, Russian, Portuguese, Polish and Persian) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and offers the following qualifications:

The College has 2 dedicated ICT suites and 2 flexible learning spaces with computer access. The College also has access to the Academy’s lecture theatres, performance spaces and ICT facilities, as well as a well-resourced Multi-Media Resource Centre and Pod (Mac suite). All tutor groups have their own classroom.
The English department hold a number of theatre trips for students, and offers opportunities for students to get involved in regional debating competitions.
The MFL department hosts a Spanish exchange, takes students on a French study trip and offers Chinese lessons to post-16 students. The College also hosts an annual ‘Languages Alive’ day, and is involved with the Comenius International research project.
To support studies homework drop in session are held in all subjects for both KS3 and KS4.
The College has run a number of recent school trips and visits, including a Christmas Market trip, Spanish Exchange, day trip to France, German residential, a trip to the British Library for A Level Language students, the Globe Theatre Visit, creative writing workshops, graphic novel workshop, RSC performance and workshop and trips to various performances including Blood Brothers, As You Like It and A Midsummer Night’s Dream . We also host regular visitors from other countries, most recently a four week visit from a group of Spanish students.
The Academy has a full, regular CPD programme on a monthly basis, with a variety of sessions offered across teaching and learning, ICT and leadership development. A generous CPD budget is also available to fund development via external courses, and the Academy is also developing opportunities for staff to access a Masters degree in Education.
The College’s international partnerships also provide a wide range of professional development opportunities.
