Year 11 Engineering Student picks up a prestigious honour.

George Garside was awarded the Arkwright Scholarship, sponsored by industry and charitable trusts.

The scholarship is awarded to pupils who demonstrate a flair for design and technology and the determination to carry their ideas through from conception to realisation.

Georges design was a highly innovative bottle crusher, the objective of it was to encourage students at the Thomas Deacon Academy to recycle plastic bottles. Then this was followed up with reducing the amount of storage required to contain the bottles prior to transportation. His design crushed the bottles using a mechanical device that was controlled with an automated control system (Raspberry pi), he combined his ICT and Engineering skills producing an excellent outcome.

George will now receive support and guidance from a industry mentor, whom will support him from his A-levels through to university.
