Thomas Deacon Acdemy launches its first book!
Academy launches its first book!
On Tuesday 29th September the Thomas Deacon Academy celebrated two new authors from the sixth form with the launch of the book ‘My Grandad Worked in Perkins.’ The students, Amber Burton and Jeveria Raja wrote the book during their sixth form studies. The launch was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Peterborough, and various members of the Academy Board. The launch was carried out by Wing Commander Chris Eagen, Commanding Officer, Defence College of Aernautical Engineering, RAF Cranwell.
The book is a social history of the impact that Perkins Engines Limited has had on Peterborough since it was created in 1932. It also traces Amber’s grandparents journey in which they met whilst working at Perkins and both worked for many years for the company. It will be of significant interest to anyone who has had a relative who worked at Perkins and copies of the book are on sale in the school shop and the Peterborough Museum. In fact the book gives a good description of Peterborough’s importance as an industrial city from the coming of the railways in 1850 through to the present day. We wish it every success.
The book has been approved by the British Library for inclusion in their collection and this confirms Amber’s and Jeveria’s status as authors. Guidance and help with the book was given by the Academy, Chris Woolhouse (ex director of Perkins) and Molly Birkett of Barny Books.
