Science College

Science is important to all of us. Everyone needs to understand scientific ideas to know what’s going on in the world today, and science helps people to be successful. Science courses at University are a great way to success in life. Science is also exciting!  We think so, and we hope our students will as well.

Our students arrive in year 7 really excited about science – they’ve seen our wonderful building and teachers, and they are ready to learn. The lessons we teach in years 7 and 8 help turn the excitement into real skills and knowledge, preparing the students for their qualification courses. They finish these courses at age 16, and have been very successful - GCSE and BTEC results have been good and improving.

Students are keen to carry on studying in Science College. Our sixth form courses have doubled in size since we opened in 2007. A lot of students from others schools also join us for sixth form science.

We are constantly improving what we do in Science College, to make sure we have the best courses and lessons that we can. Below is an outline of what is currently on offer.

Lesson 1Ages 11-13 - Key Stage 3

In years 7 and 8 we run the successful ‘Exploring Science’ course, which we’ve adapted to make best use of the great facilities here. It’s an exciting course aimed at preparing students for their qualification courses which start in year 9.

Ages 13-16 - Key Stage 4 - Qualification Courses

All students take science qualifications at age 16, and we have something for everyone.

We offer separate sciences GCSEs (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), ‘Double Science’ GCSE and the BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science. Students can get onto sixth form science courses from any of these, depending on the grades they get, and we hope that many of them will want to.  We encourage students to think about this all the way through.

We also offer BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care and GCSE Electronics as options.  These courses are popular, and to get onto them students need to be recommended by their teachers.

Lesson 3

Science in the Sixth Form - Ages 16-19

We offer A levels in Biology, Chemistry, Health & Social Care and Physics, and BTEC National Award in Applied Science. These are all taught by specialist teachers, and benefit from our great facilities and resources.

This wide range means there is something for everyone. All our courses all lead on to good University courses and careers – scientists, engineers, medics and care professionals are all in high demand, and careers in these areas are highly rewarding.

Top grades have been achieved by our students in all our courses over the last few years, and we have had students go on to top UK Universities.

Science College is an exciting and rewarding place to be. If you would like more information, please contact Mrs Annette Treeby at the college admin desk - email annette.treeby@thomasdeaconacademy.com
