Humanities Spirit - Recent Events
Below is a selection of events that recently took place in the college and demonstrate the humanities spirit in action!
Winter/Spring 2012
Student achievement update from Miss Fordham
The Humanities Band was once again victorious at this year’s ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition. They have now won a total of 4 out of 5 of these competitions! This is an outstanding achievement and is testament to the hard work and dedication shown by those in the band (this year comprised of Nina-Bunting Mitcham, Jessica Scrine, Warren Allett, Jared Selcraig, Stevie Chesney and Benjamin Wright). These students should be congratulated for their effort and commitment leading up to the event and their exceptional performance on the night. They impressed the judges with their musical ability, song choices and the energy with which they were performed. We are looking forward to retaining our title next year!
History update from Dr Wiggin
History had some encouraging results in the January exams with 46.7% of exams taken being awarded one of the top two grades available.
Peterborough Museum has now re-opened. The history department will be organising trips to see the new exhibit of a nineteenth-century operating theatre to support the History of Medicine part of the GCSE course.
Business update from Mr Dilley
Business students have been taking part in the Young Enterprise programme. The programs mission statement is "to inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise." Its guiding principle is to do this through 'learning by doing.' Pictured are Michal Kowalski, Gjergi Bacca, Tyler Lewis and Benjamin Frederick who took part in the Huntingdon trade fair and sold nearly £100 worth of candles they had made from recycled glass.
Geography update from Mr Fehrenbach
BBC Schools News Report 15th March 2012-04-18
As part of the geography`s department commitment to keeping our students up to date with geographical news events as they happen, a team of our Yr 9 students worked on producing a series of short news items based on the Peterborough area. Stories covered wide ranging topics including the arrival of Primark to the Queensgate shopping area and the amount of food waste that takes place in the school canteen. The final news stories were then filmed and loaded onto the BBC website where they could be viewed by the general public.
As part of this same event two of our students went down to London to cover a news story on the Olympic Games. While they were there they had the opportunity to look around some of the venues in the Olympic Park and then met Lord Coe, chairman of the British Olympic Organising Committee, and asked him what impact the games might have on the Peterborough area. This particular item was also filmed by a film crew and was broadcast on the BBC Look East programme that evening.
Yr 7 Visit to Wimpole Hall Farm 20th March
A group of 30 students had the opportunity to visit the Wimpole Estate, Royston as part of their studies on farming. While there they had an opportunity to get an insight into the running of a farm and livestock management at lambing time. Students met with the shepherd and also saw some of the rare breeds as well as visiting some of the farm buildings where other animals were kept. The day was a beautiful spring day with the daffodils in full splendour and an enjoyable day were had by all.
Religious Studies update from Mrs Nicholls
The Religious Studies were visited by LZ7, a Christian band, in March 2012. They performed for year 9 and year 11 students and delivered lessons on human trafficking and prejudice. LZ7 also gave students a fresh perspective on Christian worship and vocation.
Social Science update from Miss Fletcher
As a department we are very pleased to announce that 78.5% of A2 Sociology students achieved A- C grades in their SCLY3 January exam. Furthermore, we are very proud to say that ALL of the A2 Sociology students passed the exam with an A-E grade.
In Psychology, the achievements of our students are also highly positive, with 70% of the students achieving A-C grades in their PSYA3 module in January and 90% achieving A-E grades.
As a department, we continue to support both our Sociology and Psychology students with revision sessions on Wednesday afternoons (Period 3) and we are very optimistic that the strong results from January will continue into the final A2 exams in June.
Summer/Autumn 2011
Ypres Trip
In June 2011 60 students from Year9 followed in the footsteps of their great, great grandfathers and visited the Belgium town of Ypres. This was the scene of terrific and terrible fighting during 1914 and 1917. Students saw the largest British Military Cemetery at Tyne Cot, The Menin Gate, Hill 62 Trench System and visited In Flanders Field Museum.
