Year 13 Engineers Trip to Perkins

Categories: School News

The day started with full tours of the modern engineering facility, where robotics, computing technology and efficient manufacturing are enabling Perkins to compete internationally. Perkins has a dealer network in 40 countries and is also creating manufacturing plants across the world. In Peterborough an engine leaves the production line every 37 seconds and they also have 2500 different engine combinations so that clients get a custom built engines to suit their needs.

We were then given a tour of their research and development area where extensive testing takes place on their next generation products.

Students were given the chance to spend some time with young engineers as they discussed their role in the company and areas they are involved with this included; Robotics, Design Engineering and Computer Aided Engineering. These proved fascinating and again showed Perkins as a world leader in this field.

The final part of the day was a general discussion with Mr Andy Wheatcroft (Technical Facilities Manager) who discussed how the young engineers at Perkins could be used to support budding engineers at Thomas Deacon. A number of ideas where discussed including a 2-day course on disassembling and assembling an engine, also providing engineering mentors for our students.

Everyone enjoyed the experience and the students gained great insight from the day. It certainly confirmed the choice of engineering for some students, and made others think about it as a career. Perkins has committed to this tour taking place annually with Year 13 potential engineers.

Thomas Deacon Academy would like to thank the staff at Perkins Engines Ltd for making this such a special day for two members of staff and six engineering students.
