STEM Big Bang Event 1st to 5th December

TDA’s thought provoking STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) event, The Big Bang, is taking place from the 1st to the 5th of December. This event encourages students to ‘think STEM’ and offers innovative opportunities for students to take part in varied workshops including Brain of the Dead – Zombie Science, The Bloodhound Project – racing cars and Mathematical Magic.

Sports students in Years 11, 12 and 13 can take part in ‘Challenge the Champions’ workshops with activities such as racing elite sprinters on ‘The Accelerator’ to find out their peak running speed to seeing how much power they can generate on a ‘Watt’ bike.

There will also be a sponsored ‘pi’ recitation challenge where students can be sponsored per digit remembered with the proceeds going to the NSPCC. ‘Trashion’ workshops will cover the upcycling of old clothing and textiles with designer Tracy Cliffe, who has worked on exciting projects such as Coronation Street.

The aim of the week is to stimulate and stretch young minds creating an interest in STEM subjects for the future. Bob Duddridge, TDA’s STEM Leader and a previous winner of the STEM Teacher of the Year award, said:

“Not many people know that the entire internet weighs about the same as one large strawberry! With our Big Bang event we want to challenge our students to think about STEM subjects and show them just how fascinating they are.”
